Every day, the average Indian smartphone user gets four to five calls from numbers they don’t recognize. Answering is a gamble. Ignoring might mean missing something important. Equal AI raised $30 million to solve that exact problem – and its ambitions don’t stop at your phone.
The Hyderabad-based startup closed a Series B co-led by Prosus Ventures and Tomales Bay Capital, with Think Investments and Valiant Fund also joining. Total funding now exceeds $42 million.
Why Call Screening Is a Billion-Dollar Problem in India
Truecaller tells you who’s calling. That’s useful, but it doesn’t tell you why. A single number might deliver your groceries one day and pitch you a loan the next. Knowing the name doesn’t solve the problem.
Equal AI takes a different approach. Instead of just showing a caller’s identity, its AI assistant actually answers the call, engages the caller in natural conversation, figures out the intent, and hands you a plain-language summary. You decide whether to join the conversation, dismiss it, or let the AI handle it entirely.
From Data Infrastructure to Consumer AI
Founder Keshav Reddy didn’t build Equal AI as a call-screening startup from day one. The company started in 2022 as a data-sharing and identity infrastructure business. The pivot to consumer AI came in October 2025, with the launch of what the company calls India’s first AI call assistant. Since then, the product has crossed one million monthly active users and 300,000 daily active users – a number it hit in under eight months.
That growth rate is what brought Prosus back to co-lead a round 18 months after backing the Series A at the same stage.
A Star-Studded Angel List That Signals More Than Money
The institutional backing matters. But the angel investors behind this round may say even more about where Equal AI is heading.
Backers include Sameer Nigam, founder of Indian fintech giant PhonePe; Zubin Bharti Mittal from the Airtel family office; Meta’s VP for India and Southeast Asia, Sandhya Devanathan; and Skyflow AI co-founder Anshu Sharma. These are people who run payment rails, telecom networks, and social platforms across India.
That’s not a coincidence. It’s a preview of what Equal AI wants to become.
Beyond Call Screening
The company has already told investors exactly where the $30 million is going: deeper AI voice processing capabilities, expansion into financial services, shopping assistance, and lifestyle concierge features. In other words, Equal AI wants to be the AI layer for everything you do on your phone, starting with the one thing everyone hates most – unknown callers.
Prosus global co-head Thiago Viana framed the ambition plainly: the goal is an AI lifestyle concierge for 100 million Indians.
Conclusion – India’s AI Moment Is Happening on Your Phone
The biggest consumer AI products aren’t always the flashiest. Equal AI doesn’t write your emails or book your flights. It just answers your phone and tells you what’s going on – and apparently, that’s enough to build a million-user business in under a year.
With Prosus returning, a high-profile angel list, and a clear roadmap beyond call screening, Equal AI looks less like a utility app and more like the start of a broader AI platform play. Whether it can scale across India’s 22 official languages and eventually move into enterprise markets will be the real test of the next $30 million.
